Landskonkurransen 2016 NFF

This year I entered with 4 photos as usual, and I received 3 Honorable Mentions/diplomas. In competition with 181 other Professional photographers inculding 716 other photos, I am fairly satisfied with receiving these, even if my competitive instinct always want victory!

Here are my entries for 2016

The story behind “Mercy”

Written in 2011, this is how a simple shot (and this was just a test shot really) can transform into a prize winning image!

Today I feel I created something special, not just because the three wonderful kids are my family. But because the moment I was finished, I was filled with a certain sentiment.
The photo made me feel something…and I thought I could share how I accomplished the finished result.
The light was set up by 4 lights:
– 1 on the white background
– 1 main light (deep octa)
– 2 softboxes as backlights from each side
This is straight from raw (1/160 f8)

unreal_-85-2

Step one was of course twisting the raw file, reducing saturation and adjusting temperature/exposure/fill light/recovery/blacks until I was happy with my vision.
After converting, croping was necessary to get rid of the elements that had nothing to do with the essentials of this photo. After all, this is all about their faces and expressions, as well as the great work by stylist Vidar Graven.
A little softing was applied, but not much as these are children. Too much would just look unnatural.
The fun part was experimenting with textures, and I used two different ones, which I have used several times before:
lomofilm1stainedpaper5
I played around with these, adjusting tones, opactiy and applied gaussian blur to all, and ended up with one layer of the “old paper” set to soft light, and two layers of the “grunge” texture, also set to soft light.
When happy with the transitions, I flattened the image, and started working in a color software, adding several layers of “low key” toning, as well as lighting the center/darkening the surroundings. This is a test of patience, as you never get totally happy…but in the end I just had to save and see what happened.
And this is when I realized I had something here! Slowly working the edges, adding some contrast, and then removing some, I got to the final stage of color adjustment. This is where I finished, and got this:
mercy

And finally, the awards

  • Bronze NFF Landskonkurranse 2013
  • Photography Masters Cup Nominee 2013 – Fashion
  • Silver NFF Laugskonkurranse 2012

NTNU

Lately, I have been preoccupied finishing the work for NTNU. The assignment here was creating 5 images, each representing an area of focus for NTNU (Health, Sustainability, Energy and Ocean). The 5th image is a group shot of the superheroes togehter…The idea behind this, is children dressing up as superheros, with props they could have found themselves, not high tech inventions. For this matter, I brought in necessary assistance in Vidar Graven, friend and stylist, who master these issues better than me. With sewing skills and creativity, he found the necessary means to complete the outfits!
Well, the models are selected from various sources. “Energy Girl” is Isabella, my daughter age 6.”Sustainability Boy” is Odin, a boy I have worked with before during sessions for City Lade. “Ocean Boy” is the son of my former boss actually – I guess he had the most challenging job of the models, having to jump on a trampoline during terrible weather outside my home. “Health Girl(s)” are daughter of a friend´s friend. Her fit elderly lady climbing with her, is someone I found via Facebook friends. When I called her and described the mission, she just laughed and said yes immediately!! Sporty chick!
The process has been hard at times, but in the end I hope NTNU are pleased with this, and for my own part it has been a great learning experience. Also, a personal favorite of “KickAss Rescue Chick” came in the aftermath :-).

CITYLADE

My last few months have been rather quit as to producing new material. Well, I did do one cool job for Headspin advertising (City Lade). Lots of work, but good fun and great people as well as exposure. Here are a few images from this work.

I look forward to working with Headspin in the near future, as we have plans for Mother´s day and hopefully Valentine!!

youth portrait

This is the season for youth portraits in Norway, as we are heading for “confirmation season”/konfirmasjonsesongen.
3 years ago, I took her sister’s photos, and now it was Erle who is up for confirmation. I decided to try a totally new location in Trondheim, at least new to me. We headed for the golf course, which lucky for us is not open yet…I like the landscape and curves, and there are some other buildings on site available.
The light was kind of tricky, being in the middle of the day (Easter Monday), and my starting point in photoshop was this (not extremely fantastic):

The adjustments were:

Skjermbilde 2014-04-22 kl. 22.24.39

I knew then I would have something to work on further. The layers look like this in the finished photo:

Kind of cool (or at least better) in just a few minutes of working. The final image will be something like this:

personal workshop – summary and slideshow!

A few weeks ago I decided to spend 5 days of shooting. Something just for fun, other ideas were more planned. I made appointments with various models, and tried to fit in as much as possible in my schedule.
First, I visited an industrial site (where I previous week made sure to get permission, which is rare there) to shoot HDR backgrounds, knowing I would spend time in my studio and get material for compositions.
Of course, shooting for five days relieves you of time, as editing is a huge part of my process, at least for some of my work.
The first day, my objective was shooting the player (which is documented in previous post). Then, bodybuilder Kim Johnny Falk paid me a visit. Lucky for me, the visit was a friendly one, but the photos I wanted was not the ones you associate with friendship and nice-guy.
I am very pleased with “human wrecking ball”, my personal recent favorite. This was of course not easy for me to process, and learning by doing played a huge role in this project. But my initial vision was fulfilled.

Tuesday I met up with Jannicke Larsen Hustad at Training Room in Trondheim for fitness shooting. Here, I loved that colorful yellow wall I found. I immediately knew what I wanted from the light and could see the end product whilst pushing the shutter…
Also, there are some faces and light-learning-portraits, and I finished off with the female samurai on her search for revenge ;-).

The photos here are my first chosen ones, but there will be more when I find the time to process them.
There might also be a BTS from “human wrecking ball”….if desired.

The Player

Several years ago I came across a photo that inspired me to create “the player”, a photo by the image-genious Dave Hill.
My main problem was finding a chess board that matched the idea, and I was fortunate to find one in a fashion shop, Carma. They had no problem lending me this one for the weekend. Well aware of its’ value ($1500), I transported the board CAREFULLY.
Another issue was finding the model, as the original model called in sick 2 hours before shooting…I originally wanted a blonde model, but I guess the dark Joana worked perfectly. Thanks to Mats Heitmann, she looked as “fierce” as she should be for this job.
Here is my chosen exposure, with the development settings.

The background (chess patterned) was already made in photoshop. I also shot a few pictures of the king, with the idea to get this in the end result.

sjakkbrikke

Of course, the editing process was time consuming and difficult, and the end result was not perfect. But at least I got it done:-). Sometimes, following up on ides is a satisfaction in itself!

RITA

Last week I had the pleasure of shooting my first album cover. Rita is releasing her debut song “Carousel of Dreams” (Drømmens karusell) February 14th, on Valentine´s Day!
This has been a dream for Rita since she was a young girl, and finally all the work, effort and desire she has put in results in realizing her dream.

Look for her music at Spotify, as well as in local shops in Trondheim, as the song is beautiful.
The cover will look more or less like this. Rita´s thoughts were in the direction of a dreamy look, and we originally shot on location. However, the wind on this day was powerful, as well as cold…This resulted in involuntary tears and a chilly look. We decided to re-shoot in studio (as I luckily had saved files to make an HDR of the background).
Rita is happy with this end-product, and all that is left is wishing her the best of luck for the release!
